This article presents proof that Walter Chiles I is a qualifying ancestor for the Society of Colonial Wars, and proof of his lineage to the Mullins family.
Walter Chiles I was first elected to the Virginia House of Burgesses in 1640, representing Charles City County [1]. He represented Charles City County from 1640 through 1643 [2]. Subsequently, he purchased land and a home in Jamestown [3] and was elected to represent James City County in 1645, 1646, 1649, and 1653 [4,5]. In 1653, Chiles was elected Speaker of the House of Burgesses, but he served for only 1 day because of the strenuous objections of Virginia Governor Richard Bennett.
Qualifying Service For The Society Of Colonial Wars
Walter Chiles I satisfied the criteria as a qualifying ancestor for the Society of Colonial Wars based on his service as a Burgess. He satisfies the criteria as a qualifying ancestor for the Jamestown Society based on his service as a Burgess, and based on his ownership of land on Jamestown Island before 1700.
Chiles Lineage
Walter Chiles II was the son of Walter Chiles I and Elizabeth [last name unknown].
A deed was recorded May 20, 1670, for Mr. Walter Chiles for 70 acres “in James Citty Island called Black Poynt.” The deed states that this land was granted to his father, Walter Chiles, and was due Walter Chiles II “as sonne & heyr” [6]. This deed proves that Walter Chiles’s father was Walter Chiles, and that both men owned Black Point on Jamestown Island at some time during their lives.
The name of the mother of Walter Chiles II is established by a deed recorded March 1, 1638 for 400 acres in Charles City [7], including 200 acres “for the per. advs. of himself, his wife Elizabeth, his sons: William & Walter.”
In her history of the Chiles family, Davis [8] cites multiple documents and other historical references that show a continuous record to connect the Walter Chiles’s, father and son, of the 1638 deed, and the Walter Chiles’s, father and son, of the 1670 deed, proving that the mother of Walter Chiles II was Elizabeth.
