Sir Ralph Bates

1730 -

1783

Sir Ralph Bates (1730-1783) of Milbourne and Holywell and his wife Lady Anne Ellison Bates were Lord and Lady of Milbourne Hall in Northumberland, England. The property was purchased by Thomas Bates (1525-1587)  in 1552. Sir Ralph and Anne had 10 children. The eldest, Ralph, inherited Milbourne Hall. 5 other sons died without children. Their fourth son, Richard Bates, was killed on board H.M.S. Argo on 17 Feb 1783 in the West Indies. Of 5 daughters, 2 died young, and 2 married “well” into other families of nobility.

The youngest child of Sir Ralph and Anne Bates was the next in the Bonner lineage Nancy Bates. She married a British soldier, Robert Turnbull, and moved with him to his hometown Lilliesleaf, Scotland, 40 miles away from Milbourne Hall.

The Bates family are “gateway” ancestors connecting the Bonner family to several English and French kings.
